A few years ago I used to work out in the Naperville, IL area. I used to see an old (red) heavyweight combine all the time off of Eola Rd. And N. Aurora/Indian Trail rd. It looked pretty beat up and worn out. Does anyone have any info on it and if there are any plans for it if its still there?

If it is the car I think you are talking about, it is on the north side of the tracks at Eola. The car was there two weeks ago when I rode through. Something is going on as the facility it is at has been cleaned up, brush removed, etc.

That actually doesn't look like a combine, but rather a full baggage car (note missing belt rail where the left hand door has been filled in) that has had windows cut in the side. A combine would need step wells; this car doesn't appear to have ever had them.

It does appear to have strange trucks... no drop equalizers. That should be a clue as to the origin road.

That is the passenger car! I'll have to take a look at it sometime if I get out that way. Looks like there is a post office just around the corner from it too.

The link below has several photos and additional background on this former C&NW car:

Some, if not all, of the window openings may have been added by the C&NW when the car was converted for company service.

So............ not a "heavyweight," then.

This car was at IRM at one point around 1980 but was sold in 1983 to a private owner.

In the late '70s when ever I worked out of the CNW DesPlaines Illinois coach yard with my old 1946 American Locomotive crane, I'd usually park next to this RPO/ baggage? car which sat on the old turntable lead along with 1 or 2 other cars. They were used by the signal department and MOW. At that time no one knew the turntable was still under the cars cause the pit was filled in. Table was still there last time I was, in 2012. Of course I've been an IRM member since '68 .
