Does anyone know of anyone who still cuts custom keys for locomotive locks and passenger cars? Is it even worth it? I hate mounting pad locks to the doors of equipment as they always look terrible and Jerry Rigged. There has to be a better way to secure equipment in the yard.

Any decent locksmith (NOT a key cutter), should be able to do it. Most shops still keep a decent selection of skeletons in stock. You would be amazed how much they are still used.

Adlake still makes locks and keys the same as always. Just make sure your wallet is full before you call...

A friend just had a run of Adlake keys made, and they were only 10$ each.

Interesting! Can anyone just order a set of keys? Who is considered an "end user?"

End users would be RRs and car owners.

I sent James Hoard a picture of my key and they sent me 2 that were not a match. I needed a key for a caboose. You might try eBay

There are several on ebay, cheap:

I have one that came with a set of switch keys I found on the ground in my hometown along the Santa Fe over 30 years ago after one of the last track gangs using camp cars ever packed up and left. Prior to the use of switch locks on locomotives during the last decade it would open any locomotive, caboose or passenger car door.

My favorite key story is about the WW&F Railway Museum which took a key from the old railway circa 1912 to Adlake and had new switch keys make to use on the modern museum's line.

It seems they kept the old patterns.

I guess I never realized the keys were that universal. I will have to take one out of the museum and go rattle it around in a lock and see if it works I guess.
