I see Grand Canyon Railway has a dozen steam trips scheduled for 2018.

Given this part-time schedule, does GCR employ part-timers and contractors to run steam? Or is there a full-time staff?

In the past, changes were made to 4960 by GCR to improve its performance. Is there any of that kind of work still going on?

Just interested in any news, I guess.

Thanks.

Grand Canyon Railway still has enough full time staff to maintain and operate the steam program, as the steam crew also performs other positions within the company. There are a few part time employees who work in the operating crew on steam engines and for other seasonal events. No contractors are employed for Railroad Operations.

GCR is always looking for ways to improve the efficiency and reliability of it's operating fleet, both steam and diesel. There are no items on the immediate schedule to modify either 4960 or 29, but ideas are properly analyzed as they develop.

Are the prices the same for these "Steam Saturdays" as they are for the rest of the operating days?

Yes, for most. All features of the train are the same from any other day, with the exception of the motive power.

Man vs. Machine is a special event, steam only on a separate train.
