Many thanks to all who donated to the appeal, the Go Fund Me is now closed and trucks will be paid for this week. Trucking quotes from WA are in the pipeline. We also have most of the funding in place for the move of the two UP cabooses from Heil Valley Ranch in Boulder and started a Go Fund Me for the removal of the the 1910 OSL stock car 37222, we are required to move all 3 items in the next 3 months. For the record the cabooses are NCS UP 2095 1881 and 2265 from 1901, leaving on site 2199 from 1891. This will be the oldest UP caboose in preservation we think. Going to be a bumper year for High Plains RR preservation. Today we move our 1913 UP CA caboose to Holiday Park in Cheyenne to act as the site office for the 4004 restoration, they may have at some point crossed paths before !

All great to hear!

There is a Union Pacific caboose at the Travel Town display in Los Angeles' Griffith Park that is said to date from 1881. It is number 2117. It has been on display since the early 1950s and is said to have come from Rawlins, Wyoming.

Not quite as old is the caboose at the Nevada State Railroad Museum at Boulder City. #3505 is said to have been built in August 1882 by the Oregon Railway & Navigation Co at The Dalles, Oregon. Before 1918 it was OR&N / O-WR&N #206.
See the Wikipedia page about the museum.

Interesting that UP put passenger-style trucks even on an older caboose like this one, as they did with most later cabooses, not sure when they started the practice.

2117 is from mid 1881but is the rare NCS narrow cupola style and 2095 is Feb 1881 or maybe 1880 as there are 2 entries, passenger car trucks were used on the earliest wooden cabooses and then re used on later steel cabooses as the ride was far superior, hence the lack of UP caboose wood trucks......my thought is if you need 4 or 5 sets build them all together ! What fascinates me is that these ancient cabooses outlasted my CAs built 26 and 33 years later by 7 or 8 years in some cases.
