At the Halton County, we generally stop public operations after the second week in December but may do some switching over the winter depending on conditions. We will be attempting to keep our line plowed this year to accommodate a Winterfest operation in February. So far, our snow sweeper has been up to the task. Icing up of our embedded track can be a headache as can drifting of snow in areas adjacent to buildings. We have both ice and sleet cutters if needed. In the 46 years I have been there, we have only needed them a couple of times.

Generally, the carbon insert used in the regular J-6 shoe
provides some lubrication on the contact wire. All our cars in general use have sliders, not wheels. Our London & Port Stanley, heavyweight combine, #8 uses pantographs with replaceable copper strips on the pan shoes. When the car comes in for routine inspection after roughly 6 to 8 operating days, a thin layer of graphite grease is brushed on to the pan contact surfaces. This has all but eliminated wear.
