A fellow named Stephen Low ( steve_low@bigpond.com ) contacted me about steam locomotives that ran on Newfoundland. He asks if anyone has "any technical specifications for the Alco-built Copper River & Northwestern Railway Mikados commencing with Alco 55490, 55491, 55492 of 1915 and then 57291 and 58164 of 1917. I am seeking boiler details such as heating surfaces, etc. Also, I am seeking a photograph of the Montana Wyoming & Southern Railway Mikado #20, Baldwin 57975 of 1924 (the specs are listed on Steamlocomotive.com). As you may be aware, the MW&S Mikado was the predecessor of the US Army Middle East S200 Mikados of WWII. The December 1964 issue of Trains magazine has an article about the S200s by the designer, Col. Howard G. Hill, US Army (Ret.). It has a photo of the MW&S #20 but the picture is distorted from copying. I am after a better one." Does anyone have what he needs? |

I've corresponded with Stephen about another USATC locomotive and may have already passed the info below to him. John's Alaska RR Web page has a good collection of the "Moose Gooser," the newsletter of the Alaska Yukon Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. They aren't indexed, but they may contain information on the CR&NW locomotives. http://www.alaskarails.org/historical/m ... index.html I have a copy of the boiler drawing for the Indian Mikado that Col. Hill says was based on the S200s. You can pass this to Stephen and he can contact me directly if he wants a copy of the drawing. (He has my email address.) |

I have the Trains DVD and the quality of the Dec 1964 issue is pretty good. |

I'm confused. The original question was about engines operated on the Newfoundland Rwy, which was a 3'6" gauge line. Then it mentions a USATC S200 2-8-2 which is a standard gauge engine. The USATC narrow gauge engine is the S118 class 2-8-2 which could be 3' gauge, meter gauge or 3'6" gauge. FYI, WP&Y got 11 of the 3' gauge editions and two (191 at Tweetsie and 192 at Dollywood) have been operational. Phil Mulligan |
