Post subject:  The Brookville from the RRMPA Lives Again!
The little 5 ton Brookville that sat on a radius track at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, transferred to Youngstown Steel Heritage last year has been brought back to life.

We completely disassembled the locomotive, regauged the wheelsets to 24" gauge and reassembled it with a new engine and transmission to replace the heavily damaged originals. It is getting new cab side sheets, new hood and next year will get a new cab roof. The locomotive is of course not fully finished. Much more work needs to be done but mechanically it is complete.

The locomotive is now the J&L Narrow Gauge Railroad 64 and will be in weekly operation starting this summer at the Youngstown Steel Heritage Museum.

Looks great. Nice work. A lot of progress since September. What is the new setup - engine, trans, carb?

A ford 302 and C6 automatic transmission replaces the Ford flathead and manual gearbox. Basically three lever operation. Brake, shifter and throttle. No foot pedals anymore.

What was wrong with the engine? I understand that Ford flathead V8's are worth big bucks to the car collector crowd.

There was a hole in the hood directly over the carburetor, which allowed the intake passages to fill with water. Those cylinders that did not fill with water were found to be full of nuts and mouse droppings. The block may still be salvageable, depending on the depth of the corrosion of the cylinder walls. Attempting to rebuild the engine was beyond our means so it was replaced along with the transmission that was full of rocks, sand and moisture.

Water in a engine+freezing temps=cracked block usually. Certain parts might be salvageable, but unlikely the block is. You can part out the motor on eBay and get some cash for your other projects.

Great work! You guys sure seem to get a lot done in a short time! So....will you be doing an Engineer For An Hour program with the Brookville?
