From their fundraising page.....

Have you heard?

We're very close to getting an engine to display at the museum!

...And we need your help!

This month we made an offer to purchase a 1920 Baldwin Steam Engine with coal hopper from an operation in Michigan.

At right, you can see a similar engine. Isn't it beautiful? It would be a perfect addition to our downtown location!

We're about 75% there, and we need your help to finish out this fundraising campaign! Below you can find information about joining us to support efforts such as acquiring the engine, updating our displays, maintaining our building, and more. Please consider joining us as a member, and if you can, sending in a little extra to support the purchase of the new engine!

With your help, we could have the engine very soon!

Ex Jonesboro, Lake City & Eastern, ex Frisco and ex Mississippian. Should come back to somewhere in Frisco country instead of Baltimore. It is in pieces right now and was being restored by Eagle Scouts I think.
Nice little engine. Her sister is running up in Canada.

And now we know: 1) the fate of 76, and 2) where SRI got the money to get 175.

As another wag said to me back-channel, "SRI probably took one look at the Cornells' quality of locomotive maintenance, and........"

I find this REALLY sad.

I understand that we all have the right to do with our equipment as we want. I can not believe that, if offered on the open market, that some tourist railroad would not have picked this locomotive up and paid more for it's possible future operation, than to be stuffed and mounted.

I am sure that it needed extensive repairs. Had these repairs been considered impossible, then I can hardly believe that SRI would have acquired it in the first place.

Those 2 locomotives are not only the proper size, but are beautiful locomotives.

Oakland, Md. is the last town west in Maryland, 190 miles and three hours at Interstate speeds west of Baltimore. Except for TV weather mapmakers, Baltimorons consider Oakland to be part of West Virginia.

I'm not saying 76 belongs or fits in Oakland, Md. any more than it would Oakland, California. But it's not Bawlamer, hon.

Okay, I am finally getting it. This is not the B&O Museum in Baltimore, but a museum in Oakland, Maryland with the second part of their museum name reading "B&O Museum". Couldn't figure out why the Baltimore museum would be acquiring a non-Baltimore & Ohio locomotive.

Oakland, Maryland was served by the old B&O, so I guess this name for their museum makes sense.

If 76 is THE engine they are trying to acquire, it does have a connection to the area. It worked on the Gettysburg railroad in the 70's. Here's a photo from a 1978 Chessie Steam Special from Baltimore to Gettysburg.

With a static display you don't need to make sure the feedwater pump and the injector are both working and not spraying water everywhere before you book passengers.

It worked on the Gettysburg in the 1980s as well.

Unfortunately, Oakland, Md. has about as much ties to Gettysburg as, say, Washington DC's suburbs have to the Buffalo Creek and Gauley area of West Virginia. It's a steam loco, and that's about it.

From the name of their museum, I believe I see a cosmetic restoration and a lettering of the "coal hopper" to read Baltimore and Ohio. Well....the B&O DID have 2-8-0's after all!

That fund raising page looks a tad misleading to me. Are people aware of what their donations would buy? The "similar" engine at Gettysburg is a far cry from the hulk at Owosso.

That being said, I'm happy to see the potential for this locomotive to be reassembled and cosmetically restored.

Did Gettysburg take as good condition of this locomotive, as they did 1278?

Assembled and cold is better than disassembled and parted out. Was the loco taken down for a 1472 that never happened?
