On a program the NHK World website says is supposed to be monthly but which has been appearing weekly of late, the English-language program Japan Railway Journal looks at a roundhouse museum in Japan as part of "Hands-On Railroading".

Japan Railway Journal has turned out to be a beautiful prototype for an educational, informative, yet accurate program about the nuts and bolts of railways, nicely balanced between travelogue, scenery, technology, and history without being too cloying as some English-language broadcast rail programs have been.

This show can be watched TODAY (four different times, 10:30 AM EST/7:30 PST and every six hours thereafter) via cable providers that show NHK World, digital re-transmission on some selected broadcast stations (Maryland Public Television, for example, shows NHK World on 22-4 and 67-4 in the state), or via live-streaming at the website:

A couple selected past programs can also be streamed and watched from their archive at the site. I recommend the one on the Series 40 Kiha diesel MU trains as an intriguing model for operating heritage equipment in regular service.

Many of the episodes are also on Youtube, but they are numbered, without descriptive titles.

The British host has recently left Japan, and I presume his job.
