If anybody knows of a source for some good old fashioned "hammer wrenches" or "slug wrenches", or if anybody has some extras they can sell me, PLEASE don't keep it secret any longer !!! I'm talking about the drop forged, 12 point, box end ones with a straight shank about an inch square or bigger, sizes between 3/4" and 2". (Got a nice sledge already, and some gnarly cheaters)... Also, the washout plugs on my engine fit a 3 degree tapered thread, with 11 1/2 TPI --- pipe thread, but it's IN BETWEEN 1 1/2" and 2" !!! The oldest plumbing and heating wholesaler in town has nobody who's ever heard of 1 3/4" NPT before, and nobody I know has, either. I suspect that other owners of Porter steam engines made around WW I may have a solution for this, I sure don't know any way to chase those ancient rotten threads without a 1 3/4" pipe tap. Thanks in advance to anybody who can help out. |

They may not be old, but the slug wrenches from McMaster-Carr are pretty nice.. |

Regarding your 1-3/4" NPT items, give the Gramlings a call. They have several Porters and I'll bet they have your answer! |

eBay has used slug wrenches for great prices versus buying brand new, all sizes and some sets. |

Are you 100% sure about the 11-1/2 tpi? Washout plugs in the USA are normally 12 tpi. See http://www.astoriarailroad.org/news/2.html and http://www.nationalboard.org/index.aspx?pageID=164&ID=218. - Doug Debs |

I have a boiler washout plug tap that I had made up for the J&L 58. It would probably work for your loco. I also have a big box of slugging wrenches, many of which I'll never use. |

I can't see why anyone with a CNC plasma couldn't burn you one out of plate steel. Then you could just have the correct ones for your situation. You should only have to go crazy on them once to bust them loose from the rust and time, and once you clean and anti seize the threads, never have much problem again. Quality tools in this size range are crazy expensive |

Washout plugs are usually steam bronze in small industrial critters. |
