Interesting to note that according to the city's statement in that article that at least 1 museum/group was contacted as early as October. That should have set the alarm bells off back then, I would have thought.

We (the preservation community) are lucky it rained last week. Hopefully the gofundme will hit the goal in time.

About 24hrs left, so if anyone knows someone with deep pockets, now is the time to try. Still about $16,000 short as of right now. Making great progress, but there is still a wide chasm left.

Made my donation a few minutes ago. Currently over $ 35,000.
I think it can happen!

Surely the scrapper (seller) would wait another day if needed to raise the full amount. Somebody needs to lean on the mayor in P.A.

Have any of the local tv stations picked this story up?

I remember the local NBC (4) station was located in Port Arthur.
The other two stations were in Beaumont. 12- ABC and 6- CBS.

The Beaumont Enterprise is the other area newspaper.

Any word on if the contractor will allow a 1 week extention?

I have made my donation and shared it on Facebook.

Just as important as donating is sharing on the social media site of your choice. By doing so your donation could spawn many more. That is the power of social media.

Gofundme is up to $36,700+.

The site must be fully remediated (contaminated dirt under the engine) by March 6th. This is what is driving the deadline, otherwise the city will face consequences from the state environmental protection agency.

Thus, the scrapper (contractor performing the site cleanup) must have the engine out of the way very, very soon, in order to reach the March 6th deadline.

In short, today's the do-or-die day. The goal is obtainable and we (as a preservation community) are very close. I have not heard if there has been a firm quote for the cranes necessary - maybe Jason will get lucky and end up with donated/reduced-cost services. Trucking is already being provided at cost.

There has been coverage in the local TV station.

I made a second donation today; if everyone who reads RYPN gives just a few bucks, this locomotive will not be scrapped.

As of this writing, GoFundMe shows $37,500 in donations...

I too have made a second donation. This is the modern face of railway preservation - there's no choice but to act before we loose another engine to the torch. Save steam, and save the history of steam!

I hope they make it, or can get an extension, or a down payment or something.

She's a good looker.

Donated. I've told Nick and Jason, 503 will be the comeback story of steam restoration. From the scrap pile to steam.

Honestly, what sold me was Jason's firebox measurements. Hell, that thing has been sitting over 50 years and the firebox and boiler is still good with current FRA standards? That's impressive in in of itself.

According to the podcast, the scrapper's contract with the city calls for the locomotive to be gone and the ground remediated by March 1st. Jason also said that $10,000 to $20,000 of that $50,000 figure was for trucking costs. Since the trucking is being donated at cost, they should be at their goal now.

March 6th is the deadline given to the city by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. That is the imputes for the city disposing of the locomotive. In all the info on this I have not seen anywhere that anyone has contacted TCEQ directly and asked for an extension. Obviously the asbestos is gone now. I would expect he fuel oil is gone as well. If that is the case, the principal causes of contamination are gone. They might be flexible at that point.

a great interview with Jason Sobczynski by Nick Ozorak of the 'Roundhouse Podcast', which answers a lot of questions.

To get time extension, what about extending the panel track and pulling her forward so that the site under her is exposed for remediation?
