Fifty years ago, Bob Hughes reported for work at Stamford Signal Station #38 and began learning the skills of a tower operator on the New Haven railroad. Today, he still helps out at the SONO Tower Museum in Norwalk, Connecticut. Read his story today on The Trackside Photographer.

Edd -

Very much appreciate your posting this. The info about there being 3,939 towers in service in the U.S. back in 1946 is a good talking point to tell visitors who come up to see Grasselli Tower when they are at HVRM. Also the fact that 41% of those were mechanical at that time. One other thing that might be of interest is how many towers still exist in regular service. My guess is that it is just a handful, but is there a list? Also, how many towers are preserved as historical artifacts for visitors to inspect?

Thanks.

Les,

Thanks for your comment. I don't know the answer to your questions but I will pass this on to Bob Hughes, the author of the article and see what he can add. I will be in touch.
