Post subject: | American Trench Locomotives - Master Survivor's List |
So the point of this little thread is simple... I'm hoping to use this to assemble a list of surviving American-built locomotives that were meant for trench railway use during World War One. Where there were so many built, and that they all went far afield after the war ended, I think it's fair to say that there's probably a good number still floating around in one form or another... I've been doing a lot of research into these locomotives for an unrelated project, but nowhere have I seen a concrete list of all the American-built survivors. This is just what I've found so far, but where a lot of these went to the far corners of the globe, there could be others that got shoved off to the side that might turn up when they're rediscovered... US - Quartermaster's Corps No. 1902, 2-6-2T Davenport Locomotive Works, 11/1918 C/N 1682 Currently displayed at the National Infantry Museum in Fort Benning, GA http://steamlocomotive.info/vlocomotive.cfm?Display=369 - Byron Railroad 2968, 2-6-2 Homebuilt engine using frames from a Davenport. Only steam? There's two Baldwin Gas Mechanicals in the UK that I know of. One is Moelwyn on the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways and has been sporting a WW1 livery during the centenary. The other is owned by the Mosley Railway Trust at the Apedale Valley Railway. It was 600mm converted to standard gauge and the plan is to convert it back to narrow gauge again. There's also an unidentified Baldwin 4-6-0 currently up on a flatbed car at the private Statfold Barn Railway in Staffordshire. Its time to be restored is unknown and as far as I know is part of 3 WW1 locomotives up for restoration and sale from there. (The others are Joffre 3015 and an unidentified Brigadlok). Next time I am down there I'll see if I can find out if there's a builders plate on it somewhere. |

There was a second one that came back from India with it, and that's the one that went to West Lancashire. |

I thought that some of those were the engines that were brought to Statfold, but the construction numbers are different... I think this helps prove my point. Unless someone actually is on the ground and takes notes, there's no easy way to know what's left of the 10-12-Ds that went to India. |

Wasn't there one that was recently discovered in New York state, say about 3 years ago ? It had been hidden along a hillside. It appeared on this forum. Kevin K. |

I think you are referring to: http://www.steamlocomotive.info/vlocomotive.cfm?Display=27130 This was not WWI trench locomotive; just a contractor's 2' gauge construction locomotive. |

Not to be "foamerish" and overly sentimental but it always surprised me that one was never repatriated to the US and restored to operation given what a monumental event ww1 was, the relatively nominal cost to setup a small loop of two foot gauge track, as well as the relatively nominal cost to restore one (a brand new boiler wouldn't be more than a new steam tractor boiler I wouldn't think). It could visit other 2 foot gauge lines like up in Maine and Mr. Rowlands J&L railroad on major holidays like Memorial Day and Fourth of July as a tribute to all the American lives lost during the conflict. |

Hi Dylan, thanks for starting this thread as it's a topic close to my heart. I visited the Cappy Froissy Dompierre last June so maybe I can give you an update? #1257 ALCO 2-6-T 57148/16 (exTPT) has gone to Tacot Les Lacs. The CFD website lists BLW 50HP 0-4-0 tractors 49192 & 49966 of 1917 but the one in the CFD museum carries a BLW worksplate #48606/18 - see photo below. Tacot Les Lacs has an extensive (and growing) collection of WW1 equipment http://tacotdeslacs.free.fr/collection.html Apart from the well travelled #5104 BLW 2-6-2T 46828/17 they now also have ALCO #1257 from the CFD I'm sure that I read that they had acquired a BLW 4-6-0T which had been converted to diesel but I'm darned if I can remember where I read it! Tacot have another 60cm g. BLW tractor apart from #7001. There is at least one other (6 according to one report) which has/have been converted to standard gauge. Hope this helps. Ray.
