Learning about and exploring interurban lines is a lot of fun and very rewarding. The Chicago, Ottawa and Peoria Railway ran from Joliet to the heart of Bureau County, IL. Along the way it traversed some idyllic Illinois country side. You can still find remnants of the CO&P, like this substation. I made these photos a few years ago. It is easy to find but I don't think I'll post the location just to respect the owner. The building looks solid but could use attention if it is to survive in the long term. It's just a reminder that there are a lot of interesting and important railway-related relics out there that are neglected and that deserve the attention of historic preservationists. |

around here the Northern Indiana had a line near me in SW michigan, one side road had deteriated tie lumps where it crossed, that has since been fixed however, the power company used the right of way to send power lines on, and if you know where to look you can see right of way still. |
