J&L 58's boiler has passed it's hydro test today and will soon be moved back to Youngstown for the final assembly of the locomotive. We are still planning to have the 58 operational by June and possibly sooner if the reassembly goes without much incident.

You mean I have to drive all the way out to OH again to see this?!? Great news, Rick. You show incredible endurance and enviable organizational skills. Best of luck getting it all back together. When are you targeting to complete your planned track extensions?

Building track and cars are the next two things that will be getting my attention. I think I can get the next 150 feet of mainline and the first switch done by June.

Makes me proud to wear my J&L #58 Porter tee shirt!

Rick, you make preservation look easy!

You give me too much credit! It is all just smoke and mirrors. The 58 is actually an HOn30 model that through the magic of Photoshop looks real!

Here it is without all the "Movie Magic"! :-)

Congratulations, Brother Rowlands !!!

Were the soft plug in the crown sheet, and the washout plug in the tube sheet, original equipment, or were they your improvements ??? Thinking real hard about adding them on Audrey...

Viva J&L #58 !!!

Is that a couple of missing rivets at the bottom of the front tube sheet?

Man, I wish I had half the energy and gumption you have. Can I borrow some for a few days? Maybe just fifteen minutes, even?

Nice work. Can't wait to see it run.

The soft plug is original, but the washout plug in the front tube sheet was added by JS Company to make boiler washouts a bit easier to do. It now has a total of 14 washout plugs.

That is an optical illusion.

Rick,

Very impressive. The 58 has a lot of steel packed into a small package! It will be a brute!

Great work!

Sincerely,

Randy

Rick,

You are going to have hours of fun with that washout plug on the tube sheet !!! It will be buried in crud on the smokebox side, and cemented with mud on the inside !!! I'm going to try for putting the washout plug above the waterline, so I can get above the tubes with the water hose. Of course, there ain't much room inside the smokebox on these little engines, no matter where the plug is located...

Enjoy,
Sammy

Unless Rick is going to use RO water, the boiler needs regular washouts during operation and before any layup periods. The smokebox should be washed of soot/crud with every internal boilerwash. It will be a lot harder to get the mud out of the belly without the plug under the tube bundle in the front sheet. I always thought that "hours of fun" was the whole purpose of playing with steam!?!

I doubt that the plugs will remain undisturbed for long enough to become a problem. Regular boiler washouts will assure that the plugs remain limber. Key-Tite also helps!

Post subject:  Re: J&L 58's Boiler Passes Hydro Test

Well, everybody has their own idea of FUN...

I don't know how much room the #58 has under the belly plug, but I had pretty good results by poking a flexible type nozzle (like refrigeration tubing) in the belly opening, bending it just right, and shooting it at the bottom of the tube sheet to dislodge crud. On the other hand, that doesn't work so great for removing mud from the upper tube bundle. The Porter saddletankers only have plugs located up high in the backhead and firebox wrapper sheet, which doesn't work so good on the tube bundle, either. This is my reasoning for putting a plug up high on the tube sheet. Also I'm hoping to find a position where I can remove it easier. (By the way, I like the way the Chinese handle the flue sheet deposits --- with a third blow down valve located under the belly, plumbed to discharge out the fireman's side, and with linkage so the fireman can see the glass while using it.)

Anyhow, if you're lucky, maybe you can scrounge up the right attachments to turn that plug without pulling everything out of the front end every time you do a boiler wash. I know there's enough room for your head inside there, but most likely not if you're wearing a hard hat. Hope you have a thick skull...

Actually, I guess you have to pull everything out so you can brush the tubes. Hours of fun.

Give it HELL !!!
