These are found in DoD GE 80 ton centercabs... the engine fell out of production in 1953, the same year that Ford discontinued the flat head V-8...

What are folks doing for parts... does anyone have a running take out sitting about. We bent a rod on one of ours...

Contact the South Carolina Railroad Museum. Mention me Adam McDowell sent you to them. They have/had several sitting in a baggage car. They have always wanted to scrap them and I kept saying someone someday will need parts. There is also a set in a porter in the quarry there. That engine is supposed to be stripped to be stuffed and mounted. That might be a source if they didn't heed my advice and the others are gone.

That must be one helluva well built baggage car if there are several LI600s in it. Those are heavy engines.

I do apologize, they have 6 or 8 of HBI-600 engines, Not L1-600.

It’s been a LONG time since I saw them (1980’s when the car belonged to Charleston Chapter NRHS), but that sounds about right. They were similar to the Cummins engines in our 44 (?) ton Porter centercab diesel, but they were supercharged unlike the Porters’ engines. It would be great if they survived and could be put to use.
