Post subject:  Good firing gloves?

I recently got a job firing locomotives on the Cedar point and lake Erie on their narrow gauge engines for the summer. And on steam traction have used the gloves below. I was wondering what you guys would recommend. For a good glove to hold up to the work.

Being a CP alum, I preferred gloves with a two inch cuff. There isn't a whole lot of room in those cabs (other than #4) and long cuffs tended to get caught on "things".

Definitely will look for two inch cutoffs.

Some of the Firemen I know use that style of glove, but use the cheap cotton type.

They wear two pair and when the outer glove gets worn out / dirty, they discard
the outer pair and put a new pair inside.

I don't know what they do now, but in my day they supplied the gloves. I know the current lead for the engine crews there, I'll see if I can ping him about this

Been talking to your lead, he says that the gloves you posted will work fine. They do have gloves available from the tool crib. The engines fire easy, it's not that hard on the gloves. He's currently trying to activate an account on here.

I'm really looking forward to it. I was offered the job 2 days ago. I'm heading up the 11th.

I am jealous! I was firing a wood burning 1898 Porter for our RR society. FRA shut it down because they wanted an over 100 year boiler tested to 200 psi!

The FRA just has a way of ruining fun things don't they! Is the boiler of Lap seam design and what where you guys operating her at?

I am sorry, I do not know. The engine was sold to a private party (sob). I have no idea what happened to it-I loved it!

Gloves wear out when you get oil and dirt on them. If you can avoid that, they last a very long time. Don't wear gloves when oiling. Use rags. They aren't going to wear out from the shoveling, if they are leather. If it is a dirty, black locomotive, the gloves pick up dirt from climbing the running board (sanding, wiping, air pump oil, opening valves), and then the glove deteriorates and loses its insulating ability. This should not be a problem on a nice clean park engine.

Cotton gloves will only last a few days. The material can't handle the friction of the shovel. I like long cuffs, because I don't like burning my arms.

I go through gloves very quickly at YSH, probably a pair a week. I used to buy leather palmed gloves at Harbor Freight until I found this item at Menards. Softer and better made that the HF gloves but still cheap.

Thanks Rick I will definitely look into those as Menards is right down the road.

[These locomotives don't take a lot to keep hot. Back in the day we had a single man in the cab until the parks newly hired safety man got real nervous about that. They went to two man crews back in 1975, or 76, it was after I left. http://www.cplerr.com/erMyronh.html

Looking through the provided link I can only say WOW this engine would be really easy to keep hot at a listed operating pressure of 10Lbs. I'm guessing a slight typo on the park page......mld
