Post subject:  Keokuk Union Depot Oral History Project

Railway preservation surely includes the preservation of railroad-related memories, as well as the preservation of structures and equipment. To that end, the Keokuk Union Depot Foundation has initiated an Oral History Project to record interviews with people with recollections of the Depot, or of their railroad careers related to it. This is a no-budget project making audio recordings with an iPhone (any available funds must still be applied to restoration or protection of the building) but we thought we should begin now, before the reminiscences become unavailable.

Thus far we have interviewed (1) a retired operator and agent at the Depot, who signed the clearance form for the last passenger train in 1967; (2) a retired local teacher with personal recollections of the Depot; (3) a 16-year employee of the original Keokuk Junction Railway (before acquisition by Pioneer Railcorp) who witnessed the KJ's mid-1980s restoration of the Depot's cathedral-ceiling waiting room and was involved in many other interesting activities. Several other potential interviewees have been identified.

You can listen to the interviews available thus far by visiting our History page, http://www.keokukuniondepot.org/history.html, and clicking the links near the top of the page.
