As many of you know, I'm a volunteer at the Stewartstown Railroad, in Stewartstown, PA.

The railroad's station there, built in 1914, is having roof issues. The roof was originally slate, and it's deteriorated over the last 104 years, as one would expect, and the volunteers ( the railroad is an all-volunteer operation ) have been patching it as best they can. Lower sections of the roof were in such bad shape that a few years ago the slate was removed and replaced with asphalt shingles.

With all of the bad storms this winter and spring, the roof has probably reached the end of its useful life. Water has leaked in and is damaging the plaster and lath walls and ceiling, and we're in desperate need of a new roof.

The railroad uses the station as a ticket office and waiting room when we run trains, but its also open as a museum for the railroad, with pictures, exhibits, and artifacts regard the railroad, and the town, since the railroad started in 1884. No fees are charged for anyone who wishes to come and visit.

We're looking to raise $5,000 dollars to replace the slate with a new metal roof. The $5,000 figure will get a new roof over the most damaged areas, and any excess funds will be used to repair as much of the roof as we can.

The Friends of the Stewartstown railroad are engaging in a GoFundMe fundraiser to try and save the roof, and then start work on repairing the interior. The Friends are a certified 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, so any donation made will be tax deductible.

If you can help at all, even the smallest donation, it will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reading -

Mike

$4,210 of $5,000 raised as of now. Maybe a few RYPNers can help get this over the top.

The old slates may have high value to roofers working on historic properties that need matching slates with patina. Try marketing them through networks and publications in the historic properties field - you may get what you need.

Dave-

Thanks for the idea, but the slates are in very bad shape - that's our main problem. They're delaminating and falling apart.

We are getting close in this fund drive - we'd appreciate any help anyone can give.

While fundraising continues towards getting an entire new roof (and not just repairs), work on the Stewartstown infrastructure itself continues, and the available track for Class 1 operations continue. The bigger preservation-related news two weekends ago to come out of Stewartstown came in the form of the first official weekend of train rides using the new Open Air excursion car, built on top of the Pennsylvania Railroad flatcar that was donated to the Friends' organization last year by Norfolk Southern.
