Apparently Monon SW1 #50 left today, and the truck managed to find a bridge with the cab. Its now uh, low profile..

Ill let those more in the loop add in the full details. Very sad.

See the post "That's a major oops!" now. That appears to be a link to a Facebook-hosted photo that has already been yanked from two FB accounts.

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=42824

If it disappears (likely), it's a nighttime photo of Monon 50 on a trailer deliberately off trucks, now missing stack and pretty much the entire cab.

On a more serious note, why don't trucks hauling oversize loads have pilots or other devices to warn of clearance problems? Like, the tractor could have had a tall pole mounted on the hood, and if a bridge was approaching, they could slow down and test the clearance.

Special loads lke this normally have escort vehicles front and back with the lead vehicle having a story pole. The route has to be mapped out BEFORE hand, you're not going to tie up traffic getting there and finding you can't travel any further and having no way to turn around normally with a vehicle this size. Permits are involved too before the load can even move.

No details have emerged yet but it looks like protocol wasn't being followed.

Among the electric equipment at ITOM was a couple of 19th century items.

One was a Mule Car from Indianapolis in 1868

Second was the wooden Singer #1 electric locomotive from GE in 1898.

Does anybody know where they went?

I am glad to hear that the North Shore #172 went to IRM. They will give it a good home.

Sometimes it's better to let laying rails lie.

From the facts that have been reported, it appears that the fault was (at least from the legal aspect) totally that of the pilot car company. The truck was instructed by the pilot car driver to take a road that was not on the approved route and that is where the damage occurred. Apparently, the pilot car company's insurance is paying for the repairs to the locomotive cab.

Successfully litigated? Successful for landowners? If so doesn't that basically destroy the entire rail to trail concept where a strip of land is held open for potential future rail use? Did prior judgements basically invalidate the easement remaining in existence which is the basis for the laws creating R2T?

I noticed that one piece of equipment on ITM's roster was NOT listed on the Ozark Mountain Railcar's AUCTION list; Monon boxcar #1220. Does anyone know if this car was saved by some group and already moved out? Or if not, why was it not included in the list of equipment to be auctioned off next month? Any info appreciated.

Oh man, as a big Monon fan seeing the 96C in that condition about to be auctioned off makes me sick to my stomach, even though it isn't a real Monon unit. I sure hope the equipment finds good homes. Anyone know what the plan is for the 83A?

Thomas

IMHO, the Pennsy covered hopper, the Philadelphia County and the RPO should all go the RRmPA because, to my knowledge, they don’t have an RPO or a covered hopper in pennsy colors. (The one in PC doesn’t count.)
