Wondering if anyone can share an actual Westinghouse air brake manual and parts lists for the U4 control valve. The U4 and schedule AMU were used on interurban cars such as North Shore cars, South Shore cars and Chicago Elevated cars.

Ill even take a copy of the parts lists for the U12 valves used on passenger coaches as they share many similar parts, though not set up exactly the same.

Thanks

Tony

Here's a link to the manual from the Johnson collection. Let me know if this doesn't work for you.

I also see some differences between the U4 and the U4A Emergency portion.

I'm looking. Pretty sure I have a parts catalog that applies to U4. If not, most of the
parts of a U5 or UE5 are the same. The equalizing portion (aka the "service" portion)
is identical between the two, with the caveat that U5 and UE5 valves had a cutoff &
safety valve assembly bolted on the bottom, whereas U4 used a plain bottom cap.

On the Quick Action (aka "emergency") portion side, the U4 is missing the protection valve
but is otherwise identical.

The U4A has a double-check valve portion interposed between the equalizing portion and the
pipe bracket. This is the same portion as is found on U5A equipment, and is intended for
combination straight air / automatic air systems which were common on interurbans, often
with some form of M-24 motorman's brake valve.

I take it you are associated with CTA. Your equipment is U4 and does not have a straight air feature.

There is very little from the U12 which is compatible with U4 or U5. The former was a "steam road"
valve and the latter a "traction" product. There may be a few internal parts that are the same.
The quick action valve itself (the "dump" valve on the bottom of the Q.A. portion) is the same
and the electric portion is the same (not that applies to your situation).

Feel free to email me or PM me.

UPDATE: I found the parts catalog for the U4. I'll scan it and either post it if I can
figure out how to post a file here or I'll email it

To you and others, don't forget you can get a free cloud drive on Google or other places, and then put a link to it here.
