Per Kelly's photo, I have seen a "Locomotive type horizontal return tube boiler". Yes, rare these days, but do exist!

Here is the remains of one preserved near the boat landing in Chicot Lake State Park in Chicot, AR. It was installed in a sawmill on Nine Mile Island in the Mississippi River in 1845. It is the oldest steam artifact I have personally laid eyes on. The remaining portion of the firebox was bricked in.
