My data says "The cylinders of the stoker engine are lubricated from the main lubricator in the locomotive cab. The engine proper is lubricated by the splash system from engine oil in the engine bed". In cold weather, you'll want to make sure the thing is well warmed prior to use or you'll be trying to splash molasses. There should be "KEEP OIL TO FULL" cast in the top next to the fill plug. The pet cock is for checking the oil level - there should be 1 1/2" of oil in the engine bed at all times. If oil appears when the pet cock is opened, there is a sufficient amount to insure proper lubrication of all parts within the engine bed. The oil should be drained every 30 days. At ninety-day periods, the engine bed should be drained and flushed. Oil is drained through the 1 1/4" hole at the bottom. (Of course, they're using that schedule for daily service but you don't want to ignore the oil and engine house maintenance called for checking the oil for foreign matter). Of course, on the steam side, use whatever valve oil the locomotive is using and that 2-3 dpm feed should enter before the reverse valve. There may be a plug in a tee in the steam supply line which is intended for emergency oiling of the steam side.

That loose nut is why hammer tests are done frequently everywhere else on locomotives. It's always trying to disassemble itself.

The Piston Rod Gland Lock Set Screws (10399) can be seen in the above photo - square-headed, just behind the flat iron pipe bracket and to the right of it. It appears that both the oil side piston rod stuffing boxes and valve stem stuffing boxes screw into the engine bed. On the steam side, the piston rod stuffing boxes screw into the engine bed and the valve stem stuffing boxes screw into the cylinder block. The engine bed should have clearance for the stuffing box to pass through.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Bob is really the person who will be using the information you've presented, but let me add a "thank you" from all of us at New England Steam Corp. for your participation in getting this right.

Thought you guys might like to see some pics of a Standard Stoker Co. 5"x5" bare engine bed stripped and clean. A bunch of hours since the first pics in this post!
