How many amtrak MHC boxcars remain? Cars like this one. https://www.ozarkmountainrailcar.com/news/2018/04/23/amtrak-mhc-car-1464/

Does #1464 survive? I heard that car was for sale and would be scrapped if no buyer was found.

That car is the 8750, the ex-William Penn. A real odd design. Sold off some years ago. Not sure what Amtrak had in mind there. More than 48 table seats, but minimal kitchen/prep area. More like one of the cafeteria lounge cars really. You can't do much in the way of hot food prep in that car.


If the car was used as a "Parlor Car", then it would not have done full-meal service, and would not have needed a full kitchen. A lot of Pullman parlor, lounge, or combination sleeper/lounge cars had a small "buffet" food prep area. Perhaps DC NRHS' Dover Harbor is one of the best remaining examples of that, although the volunteers on the car do an admirable job of putting out full-meals with the galley they have there, though larger than many such cars. Usually, parlor service was more drinks and sandwiches, and often done with only one attendant on the car.

It was originally a Pennsylvania RR Parlor Car, later converted to a PennCentral Parlor Club Car with small galley, then converted more than once by Amtrak, finally as a Diner.

With all the concern and talk about the various diners, club cars etc little has been said about the large number of baggage cars that are being offered in this sale. Has anyone in this group had their hands/eyes on any of these cars and if so what is the condition of them in general. The use would not be for running purposes just to get them from Beech Grove to another location.

With the bid period being closed, and parts of the federal government shutdown, would anyone have any insight as to when the results of this sale will be complete?

Amtrak, like the US Postal Service, is a quasi-public not-for-profit corporation operated in the manner of a for-profit, with an annual appropriation from the Federal budget.

Amtrak trains have not stopped running, and the Post Office is still delivering mail. If we get to the stage where the PO and Amtrak stop, we will be in Venezuelan-style anarchy.

We never did get a formal "winner's list" from the first round of sell-offs, either, only the word that none of the equipment would be donated.

Rumor is that all equipment in both sale rounds were sold to Corridor Capital, who already owns a fleet of ex Amtrak Hi Levels.

I don't think this is the case, but regardless we should be finding out in a few days.

You cannot throw a stick without hitting one of those....
There are at least 4 or 5 on the Adrian and Blissfield in Michigan.

There are a bunch of these floating around Bear and Wilmington DE. I saw a few on some MoW trains by the NS Edgemoor Yard.

Those should all be from the 2nd order of MHC's with the "General 70" trucks - just like the Horizon cars, Viewliners, and Superliner II's have. Few of those have been sold off yet. The ones that were sold years ago were from the 1st order that have the BX trucks.
