Post subject:  Alco 251 Engine Technical History Book

I just wanted to mention "251", subtitled "A Tribute to F. C. Tromel and His 251 Engine" by Christopher G. MacDermot for those who are interested in the history of Alco, or the design and development of Diesel engines.

This is a very unique book that traces the development history of the Alco 241, 244 and 251 engines and the role that Fred Tromel played in that process. It is very much different from the usual railroad "history" books in that it is written by an Alco manager who was closely involved in the service support for this engine product line and knew the principals who were involved in creating the product. It is illustrated with photos and diagrams that provide a comparison between components of the 241, 244, and 251 series Diesel engines, as well as providing photos of some impressively failed parts that were re-designed in the learning process.

The book is 75 pages, stiff glossy paper covers, glue bound, and priced at $49.50. When you consider that the current crop of picture slide collection books with minimal captions, printed in China, are now far more expensive, it is an excellent value for the very unique nature of the information it provides. There are very few publishing projects that provide this kind of an insider view of the industry.

I won't post the full address or e-mail without his permission, but if you google the author's name as I have it posted above, along with Schenectady, NY, you will find the correct address.
