Any one need 3ft gauge diesels? States they plan on retiring most of the Alcos and GE shovel noses. Article linked Below.

Is there any organization that could possibly preserve any of the old locomotives?

Nice to hear that both (and maybe a 3rd!) steam engines have a future. Also nice to know about the historic wooden passenger car fleet.

Figured this was coming with the recent change of ownership.

The Durango & Silverton was looking for 3-foot diesels back when the fire was scorching the mountains around Durango. From what I understand, they are having 2 new diesels built for use during high fire-risk periods. Perhaps they might want a couple backups if the price was right.

The GE's were just completely rebuilt inside and out with new components. Surprised to hear they're on the hit list.

I had heard that they were not preforming up to expectations. That is probably why three of them were just sent south for upgrading.

I'd like to see the Alcos in Rio Grande black and gold.

Pretty sure that LGB already did that for you.

The method of converting full-size B-B units to B-B+B-B has been done for meter-gauge service, 36" isn't much narrower.

That's not surprising, I have yet to hear of an 'eco' upgrade that was worthwhile with the exception of EMD's.

Quote:
The locomotives, Nos. 90, 93, and 98, are part of a small fleet of General Electric-built shovel-nose diesel fleet dating back to 1954. The majority of the GE units on the roster had been previously rebuilt and re-engined with Cummins prime movers by contractors CEECO in Tacoma and Sygnet Rail in Tenino, Wash.

Nos. 90 and 98 will receive new high- and low-voltage wiring; installation of NRE N-Force microprocessor control systems; new electronic brake control; all new air plumbing; new control stand; complete truck rebuilding; Cummins engine upgrades; new battery charging system; and dynamic brake grid and blower improvements. Unit 93 will receive all new air brake plumbing.

All equipment is scheduled to return to Skagway ready for service by the end of April 2019.

Ten coaches in the 300-series went as well.

A pair of the Alcos in Colorado would add some more draw for railfans and diesel buffs, doing them up like the foobie LGB ones would make them not a foobie anymore!

Article and a photo of the new power. Sadly, I'm not impressed with the looks.

(Item of note--the trucks under the unit seem to be standard gauge Blombergs in use as shop trucks. I believe these units are to be C-Cs).

The cab appears very similar to the design used on the Australian locomotives NRE has recently built. Complete with the white and red marker lights that are still in use down under.
