Just wondering about options, if any, for someone who can insure a single steam event rather then buying a whole year at a time.

Two of the biggest agents covering railroad excursion insurance are HMBD and McRail. Contact one of them.

Unless there has been some new entrant into the business in the last year or two - the answer was and remains "no". Insurance companies want to spread out the risk over a year, and none of them will insure a single day or event. Beware of anyone who claims to be able to let you "use" or "borrow" their insurance for a single day. And, I agree with the previous poster - use McRail or HMDB first as they know what they are doing.

Back when I was superintendent at the Cumbres & Toltec, we required liability insurance to cover the RR's deductible when were operated fan trips. Of course the dollar amounts require were tiny compared to today's requirements. We had one regular charter operator that came back every year, and he eased his financial burden by scheduling one event in September and the next event in June, thereby getting two events in within a calendar year, and cutting his "premium per trip" in half.
