Post subject:  "Heading To The Shop" Ex-NY Central No. 6721
Severely damaged in July 2015 by a runaway hopper off the New York, Susquehanna & Western in Utica, NY, ex-NY Central No. 6721, a 0-6-0, was on the move this morning. Its tender will be trucked to Dunkirk, NY for work while the locomotive itself will be worked-on in Utica.

This will be a cosmetic restoration.

The locomotive is owned by the Utica & Mohawk Valley NRHS Chapter. It's been on display at Utica's Union Station approx 20 years.

Thank you for updating this story. In my opinion, this was one of the saddest, deliberate destructions of a steam locomotive in recent history. I'm hoping the local repair shop has a clue as how to do this without making something bad even worse.

While the railcar was deliberately "set free" by the 13 year old (who was never charged), I do not believe he was deliberately trying to damage the steam locomotive. However, his actions could have injured or killed a lot of people at the station. The steam locomotive potentially saved a lot of lives as it absorbed a lot of the force from the runaway hopper. Had the locomotive been absent, the hopper would have probably gone straight thru the pedestrian bridge support column and caused a lot more damage and injuries.

This is one of the many reasons why I regularly lecture my teachers and classmates about railroad safety. I'm glad the engine is finally being cosmetically restored. Wasn't there another steam locomotive that was damaged by a similar scenario in Indiana? I may have it confused with this one.

Nevada Northern #93 suffered a head on with a runaway freight car a number of years ago, while she was pulling NN's excursion train upgrade. As I recall, several passengers were injured. The locomotive was seriously damaged, but not as seriously as this one.

It was on an unloading ramp. The lettering is too high on it, should be centered, but at least it's fixed.

In the last photo the tender (on level track) "seems" to tilt a little lower towards the locomotive end, but I think that might be a parallax (aka keystone distortion) effect from the camera angle.

Agree that the tender lettering is "too high", should be centered between the top and bottom of tender sides, also seems a little too far to the left.

This reminds me of the number 401 on the tender of the Southern 2-8-0 at the Monticello Railway Museum. It too is too high, and it was explained to me that the paint crew did it that way so that they didn't have to paint the numbers over rivets.

Thank gosh it's been repaired. I hope the quality of the repairs is enough to last into the next century, at least. She's carries a great weight in terms of NYC history.
