So this is an out of the box solution, but what about creating "sacrificial annodes" of piles of our junk that would divert attention away from difficult to repair/replace?

For example, if you have a locomotive left out in the open, leave a pile of pipe nearby that's slightly tricky to remove (but not as tricky as getting wiring out of a locomotive).

I'd imagine thieves would spend their time on the easier to get pipe and leave the engine alone.
