Spotted this circular structure on the Delaware and Hudson line northeast of Binghamton, NY, near Sanitaria Springs. Is this a water tower? Water tower base? Something else? It is not visible in Google Streetview. Cannot find anything about it in Internet searches.

Looks like there used to be a passing siding there and that round structure was between the tracks. I'm guessing an old water tower.

It is a base to a former water tank.

Steep grade from Binghamton to Tunnel, NY required pushers in the steam and diesel era. This was about the half way point for the grade.

Within the last 20-30 years pushers were no longer needed.

I was D&H engineer and traveled that route a lot , looking down on it , is a lot different than going by it. If it was from Kenwood , NY or Schenectady , I would know it by heart. Dave Bolton

Must have been exciting, stopping halfway up a grade for water, and then getting restarted-

Is there anything left on the former Penn Division these days? Aside from the Delaware Lackawanna Carbondale kind of course. I know Binghamton isn’t quite on the Penn Division but that line to me is just very interesting.

Based on satellite views: there is no track left between Simpson, PA and Nineth, NY (D&H mainline.) Still in place are the bridge over the Susquehanna at Harpursville NY, bridge over Cascade Creek near State Line NY, bridge over Starrucca Creek at Lanesboro PA (early iron truss?)(near Erie's Starrucca Viaduct), bridge over Starrucca Creek at Brandt PA, two bridges over Lackawanna River north of Forest City PA, two bridges over Lackawanna River north of Simpson PA. The PA portion of the route is the D&H Trail.

If anyone knows of additional remnants I'd like to hear about it too.
