Post subject:  Westinghouse 8" Steam Air Compressor
Does anyone know of or have access to dimensioned drawings of a Westinghouse 8 1/2" Single Stage Steam Air Pump? I am working on drawings of a Climax geared steam locomotive with two and since its not a Climax part I am not interested in spending a lot of time on a 3D model on which to hang a few pipes in the correct locations.

If it were a Climax part I would, but a solid model will do for its intended use.

Climax did cast its own couplers in steel which is one thing I do intend to spend some time on as they are marked "Climax Cast Steel".

I have found a couple of Westinghouse maintenance manuals online, but except for very basic dimensions (and they are mostly cut-aways) I have not found a source.

Backshop Enterprises bought the air compressor business from Bert Williams long ago, which included a lot of stuff Bert got from WABCO. You might start there.....

I thought that "Climax" couplers were a trade name used by the National National Malleable Castings Company, not associated with Climax Locomotive.

You may be correct about the coupler. Being a Climax locomotive I may have jumped to a wrong conclusion, but it is not a typical coupler like all the rest so it is probably an original 1919 design for small locomotives.

I have an 8" Westinghouse air pump in pieces on my bench now. A horizontal not vertical reverse shuttle (although I have a vertical too). I can photograph it with a scale if it would help. I will tell you that the top casting is identical to a 9-1/2" except it fits an 8 " cylinder. All the 9-1/2" tooling I have works on the 8". So if photos with reference help let me know.

I was going to say, that I don't believe that there was such a thing as an 8-1/2" single stage compressor. The sizes that I am aware of are 6", 8" 9-1/2" (with or without fins on the air cylinder), & 11". Then you get into 8-1/2" cross compound, and IIRC 10-1/2" cross compound for low steam pressures (not sure on that one).

I was working from memory (at least 4 years ago). I have an inquiry to a knowledgeable individual but have not received a response.

The only thing I am sure about is that the mounting studs on the Climax cast air pump bracket are 16" H. x 20 1/4" V. (Pattern F136) because I carefully measured them I was working on the pattern in 3D CADD and re-configuring the originals to fit the studs on the Vancouver Iron Works boiler as their number and locations were not the same as the original Iron Union Works boiler.

My emphasis was staying ahead of the rebuild and concentrating on the unique Climax parts and assembly methods and details. If the 16" H. x 20 1/4" V. matches a WABCO single stage mounting, that would tell me what size 1551 originally had.

Don't have dimensioned drawings. But, hopefully this may be of help to you.
Close-up of a very similar ....9 1/2 Westinghouse Airbrake, on Prairie Dog Central #3.
An 1882 Glasgow Locomotive Works 4-4-0.
Shows the mounting backplate.

The data plate shows serial # 944, and size as 9 1/2 X 9 1/2 X 10.
Rebuilt by Shop Services Div. Mt Pleasant IA.

Here is where I stopped. The drawing from which this was developed had the vertical mounting holes 22+" a but I used the 16" and 20 1/4".

Pending further info, this is where I stop since I am not a Westinghouse historian -- only C & O Ry., and Climax.

I found a drawing with a couple of dimensions and scaled the drawing in a 2D CADD program and this is what I was able to accomplish. I would attach a 3D pdf but file is too big.

Steven Harrod. Re. Whistle guard.

The whistle is plumbed directly into the steam dome.
Meaning it uses saturated steam.
Which can occasionally "slobber" scalding water along with steam when operated.

The guard prevents the crew from getting a face full of it,
as it's a small engine, and the whistle is quite close to the cab.

That's what I've been told anyway.

Here's a quiz question...Anyone care to comment on what Hogger Bryan is up to..just before departure...?
