The topographic map Rick attached to his message comes from a collection of such maps prepared by the City of Pittsburgh back in the day. The University of Pittsburgh has them up on a website:

https://historicpittsburgh.org/maps-geotopo

The individual sheets start with #1 in Downtown and radiate out clockwise from there. The J&L South Side works are on sheets 12 and 29.

It used to be possible to download individual maps, but Pitt apparently got greedy and all you can do now is take screen snapshots.

Be prepared to expend not just hours, but DAYS exploring these maps! ;^)

Using my gEEkery skills, I found a way to get the full maps, so I thought I would share with the board:

// Sheet 12 (1931)
https://historicpittsburgh.org/adore-djatoka/resolver?url_ver=Z39.88-2004&rft_id=http%3A%2F%2Fhistoricpittsburgh.org%2Fislandora%2Fobject%2Fpitt%253A012e1931%2Fdatastream%2FJP2%2Fview%3Ftoken%3D&svc_id=info%3Alanl-repo%2Fsvc%2FgetRegion&svc_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Ajpeg2000

// Sheet 29 (1961)
https://historicpittsburgh.org/adore-djatoka/resolver?url_ver=Z39.88-2004&rft_id=http%3A%2F%2Fhistoricpittsburgh.org%2Fislandora%2Fobject%2Fpitt%253A029r1961%2Fdatastream%2FJP2%2Fview%3Ftoken%3D&svc_id=info%3Alanl-repo%2Fsvc%2FgetRegion&svc_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Ajpeg2000

// Sheet 29 (1935)
https://historicpittsburgh.org/adore-djatoka/resolver?url_ver=Z39.88-2004&rft_id=http%3A%2F%2Fhistoricpittsburgh.org%2Fislandora%2Fobject%2Fpitt%253A029e1935%2Fdatastream%2FJP2%2Fview%3Ftoken%3D&svc_id=info%3Alanl-repo%2Fsvc%2FgetRegion&svc_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Ajpeg2000

They are slow to load, but it works.

If you're interested in how I did it, I pressed F12 in my browser to bring up the browser debugging mode (in Chrome). I went to the "Network" tab, and then clicked on the map image on the web page to see the requests that were being sent. Under the "Headers" sub tab, there's a general entry with a "Request URL".

I copied that Request URL into a different browser tab to see what it did. When I saw that it displayed the image I was seeing, I tried modifying the parameters at the end. I discovered that the chopping off everything in the URL after the jpeg2000 gave me the full image.

After that I discovered that I only had to change the Identifier string ( 012e1931 for Sheet 12 ) to the identifier string listed for each square that you want.

They may change some of the parameters in the future, but if you do the F12 thing, you should be able to find out the current parameters and just modify it again.

Hopefully this helps somebody.
