The Porter records show that they were delivered as 0-4-0T's so the tender was probably built in house. #61 and 64 were also stored at Crown Metal products, along with the 58 and 59. J&L bought a number of standard heavy 0-4-0T's in the decades prior to WWI. Still digging through the Porter roster. Aren't that many operations in the US that used a 23" gauge, more common in Eastern Europe

60 cm - a common industrial gauge for European industrial operations - is very close to 23 5/8" which makes its equipment very interchangeable with 2 foot gauge operations over here.

In regard to the 23" original gauge, could this be from an original tram operation? Could it have started out as a couple of strips that were 24" on center?

There was a logging operation in northern California that started out as a crude horse powered tram way using wood strips or logs instead of rails. In time this was improved and the spacing of the rails were measured and averaged to obtain the gauge for the steam locomotives being ordered. The gauge came out to 39-3/8 inches -- the same as meter gauge!

Just thinking and asking.

one question before I can finish the loco, what were the numbers of the other locos of the same type as the 58? I know there is/was a 57, and a 59, but were there any others?
Thanks,

Definitely the #61,#62,#63 &#64 were the same type as the #58 and #59. J&L bought a lot of the stock B-S-I 0-4-0T locomotives from starting in the early 1900's up through the 1920's. These were lighter than these four, configured for mill work, weighing in at 28 tons. They took delivery of two in 1917 (construction #5974 & 5975) and two more in 1918 (#6239 &#6240). The next two to be delivered are #6823 #6824, B-S-I type 0-4-0T 30 ton weight delivered in 1923.The first of the 46 1/2ton B-S-I 0-4-0T was #7244 (#57) delivered in 1937. It appears that Ken bought the surviving 46 1/2 ton locomotives when J&L discontinued using steam.

were the 60-64 the same overall shape as the 58? if not, then I won't make them.

Thanks,

As far as I can tell all the 46 1/2 ton 23" gauge locomotives were of the same configuration, the earliest outshopped in 1937 the last in 1947. From the Porter roster they appear to have been bought two at a time. Judging from the catalog photos, and those of the #58 there were some minor modifications made to them upon order from J&L, the massive front end the most obvious.

But (sorry its so late) Thanks to all for the help and info. It is greatly appreciated, and I will post a download link for the locomotive once its done so that any of you that have Trainz can use it!
Thanks very much, Trainman05

P.S. if anyone knows where I can get some diagrams or info for the Steel Ingot Mold cars and the molds themselves, it would be of great help.
Thanks!

I can post a link to the 3D files themselves if you guys want me to. They are final, so sorry if you spot anything incorrect. I'll note them for the "V2" of the model once that time comes around.
Thanks,

When was the line built?

The 23" gauge sounds mysteriously close to the 600mm gauge of the WWI trench railways in Europe. Both the French and the Germans used 600mm which converts to 23.622 inches. US and UK also operated 600mm trench railways to conform with the French operation.

Baldwin built both 600mm steam and gasoline locomotives for trench railways, for both training in the USA and export to France. The gassers were probably for operation close to the Front where smoke from a steam engine would make an excellent artillery target.

The trench locomotives do not look like the J&L engine though.

I also have a model of the PRR Ore Shunter (as you can see) and have a model of the center cab 70 ton in the plans.
