An actual conductor should comment, but my guess is you want to get on and off of the rear steps, so that if you stumble and wipe out you won't get run over. That is what I was told about getting on and off engines (by railroaders who let me do that as a rail buff, not an actual railroader, back in the good ol' days). So maybe put the good steps on the rear.

By front, I meant the side that faces the street. That’s the side we’ll use to enter the caboose. If she was ever going to roll down the tracks again, the good ones on the rear would make sense. Those two 40’ sections of track are her forever home.

It’s slow going but I got half the rear railing coated with Zero Rust. It’ll look even better with a couple of coats of paint.

San Dog Dewey,
You seem to be a one man band on this project. I am very impressed with the work you have done! You have saved a piece of equipment that very likely was headed for the scrap man! Thanks for all the good work.

That's some solid work right there! Big fan of the attention to detail. You ever thought about some 3D printing for some of the parts? Could be a real game changer, especially for the grab rails you're needing. Might be worth a shot. Keep killing it with the refurb, pumped to see the final product.

Thank you! I actually have all the grab rails and lantern brackets. Try to figure out how to attach the grab rails to the roof of the cupola. I would rather not bolt them down and put holes in the roof. Looking for an adhesive.

Was there a standard for caboose marker lamp light signals?

It depends on the railroad. Some were red/green, some were red/yellow. If you can find an SP&S rule book for your era, it'll be in there.

Typically, when running, red shown to the rear. If standing on a siding or passing track, then yellow or green to the rear so as not soil the trousers of the overtaking engineer.
