Not a bad vid, but don't like not seeing the compression relief/cylinder purge valves open for a couple revolutions to make sure the engine doesn't get hydro-locked from a leaking exhaust valve or injector. Hopefully it was just cut to save time. |

It does mention it was done in the description, but it is getting rare that RR guys do blow downs anymore. Most railroads don't even teach it. |

I've run that unit many times... It was built as a B unit for UP, but I don't reca!l the original number right now... As to the start up....I have noticed many places no longer teach that, not sure why...I have heard something to the effect of "the engine is too worn to bother or care"....seems a bit odd to me, sounds more like laziness or time saving.... |

I read some where that you should blow down the cylinders if the engine has been off for over two hours. |

The common rule of thumb in the marine world is 5 hours. With the exception of our FM, we do it every single time. Its 5 extra minutes. |

How many actually use the barring jack to roll the engine over instead of the batteries? I use it when we haven’t run the FL9 for a while. If it was run relatively recent, like the day prior, I’ll use the batteries. |
