Ladies and gentlemen, we’d like to introduce to you to Middle Fork Climax No. 9. Say hello to the newest locomotive in the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad’s fleet.

Very nice! Curious how the performance of this will compare to the shays/ heisler ?

Hmm, no diamond stack. That's a surprise.

I sent them a donation in 2015, shortly after a friend and I made visit. It's
really heart warming to see this project come to completion.

I'm sure she'll be trucked over to the Durbin/C&O side eventually. Doubt she'll see much service on the Cass hills.

I'm sure such comparisons were well-known in say 1919, isn't it great that institutional knowledge of that nature can now be recovered in 2019?

What happened to the #3 climax?

As far as I know, it is in the Cass shops awaiting its turn at rebuilding. I'm thinking (and hoping) that the ex-BC&G 2-8-0 is next since the rebuilding of the dormant Cass to Durbin line is only one bridge away from completion. The Consolidation was purchased for eventual use on that roughly 14-mile line along the Greenbrier River. It might be possible that #3 is redundant with Climax #9 coming on line.

#3 needs a new boiler. The gossip I heard is that its present boiler is limited to 100#.

That doesn't sound good, you'd have trouble getting the compressor to operate
even close to it's designed pressure.

This is very good news. I remember when this Climax was just a rusty pile of junk. I never thought I would see it in operating condition. Bravo!

These are great locomotives to watch as they work. Not the best riders in the cab. I think most are limited to around 10 mph.

Won't need to be trucked. Minus a 40ft bridge that the state decided that it needs more work, the rail connection has been restored. I believe the plan is to basically save the engine for special weekends.

Climax 1551 in 1991 on the dead line before restoration began by MSR&LHA.

Curious why only for special occasions? Is it more prone to need maintenance etc than the shays or just less powerful? Are climaxes typically more troublesome than shays or heislers?
