A few months back I posted a listing of all Winton/Cleveland diesel engine models produced (Which I have since significantly cleaned up and expanded, and will be a future post on my blog). I was recently able to acquire an actual listing from Fairbanks of all of their diesel engine models, and have posted it here:

Forgive this for being not quite 100% railroad, but I know we have a number of people here that are also into the large engines and such.

Its downright impressive how many various FM models have been saved, let alone the amount that are still in stationary (and to a lesser extent) marine service.

I had a conversation with a retired USN Diesel Sub Captain and he told me the submariners greatly preferred F-M engines over GM Clevelands.

The display USS Pampanito (SS-383) built in 1943 is at San Francisco Fisherman's Wharf and has FM O-P engines.

In Baltimore's Inner Harbor USS Torsk (SS-423) is on display; it too has FM O-P engines.

Curiously, the sub that precipitated our discussion, USS Becuna (SS-319) has 4 GM Cleveland 16-278A engines.

A 278A is a little bigger than a 567 and is numbered in the Winton series rather than by cylinder displacement. Both are descended from the 201A.

I have spoken to a few sub guys also, who have said the exact opposite about the FM boats. Maybe it was a crew thing?
