I was in the shipyard (it's actually in Kittery, Maine) yesterday and noticed the two small GE locomotives (44-tonners?) sitting outside the engine house. In the last 30 or so years I have never seen one outside, or even operating. Anyway, curiosity overcame me, and I stopped and asked what gives? I was told that they were to be replaced by a shuttle wagon and were going to be sold or scrapped. While I did not inspect either one myself, I'm sure they are, typically, well maintained low hours units. Both have roller bearings. I've seen updated Army 44-tonners up close and these, while looking clean, don't look exactly the same, i.e. no dual sealed beam headlights, etc. If anyone has an interest you might keep your eye on one of the Government auction sites. Ned - From what I can find online, it seems they are both 65-tonners. - Rob |

The two GE 65-tons at NSY Portsmouth are USN 65-00308 and USN 65-00566, built in 1945 and 1943, respectively. This past week I stopped by Naval Support Activity Mechanicsburg, PA, and found USN 65-00364 and USN 65-00385, GE 80-tons built in 1953, sitting outside of the enginehouse, having also been replaced by shuttlewagons. An employee said they were to be excessed in the near future, relieving that department of the responsibility for maintaining them. Since this is happening at a minimum of two naval bases, it may indicate a move by the Navy to rid itself of its old GE centercabs at the bases that still use them -- and an opportunity for preservation groups to acquire them. |
