The Hancock three chime step top had a unique base which sat on the languid plate when the bell was screwed down. It had six lugs at the base that were designed so that the bell could be removed or tightened with a spanner. Most have pipe wrench marks on them, because they either didn't have, or couldn't find the correct spanner to fit the lugs and the diameter. My question is...Was there ever such a thing ? Were spanners ever available from Hancock ? Has anyone ever actually seen one? Or were the lugs just expected to be used as grip points for pipe wrenches ? I took the bell off one of mine, and traced around the base onto a piece of paper. I need to measure the cut-out needed to go around the "waist" and see if I can get someone to water jet cut one out of a piece of 3/8 plate, file to fit, weld on a handle, and see if it can be used to unscrew a couple I've not been able to get apart.

Specialty wrenches and spanners all share the same characteristic, which is to never be found when needed. This is why channel locks are so popular today. Finding any not scarred up would be suspicious to me.
