In 1956 the Mount Emily Lumber Company donated their logging camp to the Blue Mountain Conservative Baptist Assn. This became their Camp Elkanah which is located near Starkey, OR about 17 miles southwest of Hilgard on Highway 244. Several of the camp buildings are built on Great Northern freight cars purchased in 1925. CO. #261521 Great Northern #261521 40’ flat car Capy. 60000 Wt. 23700 Blt. 6-1899 All cars except Dinning Hall 1 known to have been built by Haskell & Barker Bethany & CAMP ELKANAH office Union Pacific paper placard states: Handle Only at Rear End of Train Received at Albina 7-26-25 Samaria & Crafts Hall Have plate on frame as follows: SUBJECT TO CO’S.FAR.G.B. MTGE. May 1, 1911 Jappa & Samaria are grafted into one building (former school house) by an entryway between the two cars. Bethel divided into 2 compartments with 2 side doors, only car not on trucks. Dining Hall 1 & 2 are made into one building 2 cars long with a large addition to one side. The Crafts Hall used to be a second dining car. The dining hall was replace in 2002 and one car was donated to the Maxville Heritage Interpretive Center at Joseph, OR in 2008.
