This is the difference in that color between the EMD's and Alcos on both Spokane, Portland, & Seattle and Reading locos. Like I said, the Alco version just appears a little "richer". I've got a good idea on what the SP&S green is but here are those yellows...

The 1963 DuPont National Fleet Color Specifications catalog finally arrived the other day. 93-57625 is listed as the Singer green and 93-7261 as the Seven Up of St Louis, Missouri truck hood and fender green. Here's a sixties-era painted-on Singer store window sign, a Seven Up metal sign dated as 1963, and a retired Seven Up delivery truck from the later fifties...

Three of the railroad-owned trucking companies are listed in the catalog, the NYC's, the Burlington's, and the Santa Fe's.

Two New York Central yellows, I'm guessing for either the Flexi-Vans or MOW, 93-6578 and 93-24441.

Burlington Truck Lines, 93-21667 White, 93-2440H Red, and 93-005 Black.

Santa Fe Trail Transportation Co., 93-1157 Cream, 93-1863H Red, and 354-789 Aluminum...

Okay then, back on that Brewster Green...

For some reason, my digital camera has a hard time picking up this color correctly. LOL Instead of the yellow-green dark olive color my eyeballs tell me it is, the camera attempts to lean it more toward the green-blue. I've seen this effect occur on many internet pics of GMC trucks which are supposed to be Brewster Green as well. It does scan closer to the true color, though.

93-2015 is listed as an old Stover engine color. Here's my pic of the paint chip isolated from the rest of catalog page posted earlier and a close-up of the builder's plate fastened to the front of a Stover engine water tank along with a faded '53 Jimmy with its complimentary faded Apple Green wheels. None of them really looks like olive...

Despite that slight disadvantage...

But at least I know now that it's defintely not the classic UPS Brown Pullman Green as I thought before I began this thread.

The Utah Rails article on Pullman colors mentions one of the reasons for so many variations of green was regional in nature. I'd like to add that perhaps another was the fact the Brewster Greens and other dark green colors were popular among the railroads themselves during the era and many of the Pullman cars were painted specific to those railroads like the Railway Express Agency cars were.

Earlier on, I posted the link to the PaintRef list of the General Motors Brewster Greens but this color was used by other vehicle manufacturers as well. Here's PaintRef's listing for all the greens called "Brewster"...

This will probably be about the best pic of the darker greens I can get with my Canon A40 for the moment. The GMC Brewster Green is second from the left and the slightly lighter Mack Brewster Green is third from the right...

This is the scan of Page 17. I'll post them all up in order here eventually but it does dull the colors out a bit which makes it a bit easier to tell the differences between them. The other two olive colors in the last column are Studebaker Lebanon Green at the bottom and Dodge Dark Green at the top. GMC Jungle Green, 93-72365, and Chevrolet Forester Green, 93-62006, are more green-blue while 93-5204, Ford/Autocar Vineyard Green, is closer to a blueish green-gray...

I also find it rather comforting to know that Mr. Losse tested Great Northern's "Empire Builder" green since it has been a long-held belief of mine that this color was identical to the Reading's dark olive green. Getting run over by the UPS truck hasn't changed my mind at all on this one, yet.

Just for more fun, the Northern Pacific's "Pine Tree" green was slightly lighter than GN's Empire Builder green so which of the parent roads' hand-me-down paint colors may have ended up on SP&S E-7 #750?...

The SP&S yellow is the same as the Reading. It was a standard color from EMD. However, the dark greens are not the same.

All the GN/NP/SP&S greens are another thread, Eric. I just threw that out as a teaser. For the purposes this thread, I'm only interested in the Empire Builder green because, you guessed it, another alternative example. LOL

We both know how easily these darker green colors can be corrupted in old photos and whatnot but another area where we can search for a proper representation is in old magazine advertisements. Luckily for us, the Great Northern was a very prolific postwar advertiser...

Your samples look to be in pretty decent shape - kinda rare to find them not scuffed and stained. You may be able to use them for scanning if prepared carefully. Do note that the samples aren’t going to be an exact match to the actual paint color but should get you really close if you have something physical to compare to. That said, unless you have a drift card to compare , it’s all subjective observation anyway.

And to throw another wrench in the works, ALCo did use Duco as at least one brand. I’ve also seen references to Duco in their sales old literature.

Ads.... I wouldn’t use those as a color reference. Artistic license and all that. I know, I produce advertising as part of my business. I rarely use images that haven’t been processed in some way. As for illustrations, you’re dealing with the artist’s interpretation. They want to make the subject look good in print, not as an accurate depiction.
