Is there anything about these Chinese steamers that they don’t hold up long term? Is it maybe an insurance issue, or over haul due soon? The one at the museum in Iowa has been in the shop forever. Now RJ C and the two at IAIS are finding new homes? Is that NYS&W Chinese steamer still running?

Greetings:
All steam locomotives which are operating under the jurisdiction of the FRA are subject to CFR 49 Part 230 rules, it matters not where they were constructed, hence, they must have a 1472 service day inspection within 15 years of being placed in service as well as inspection of flexible staybolts (if so equipped) every 5 years.
As I recall, Iowa Interstate QJs 6988 & 7081 have another year before they are due for their next 1472 service day inspections (15 years). 7081 is also out of service for a 5 year flexi inspection.
R.J.Corman QJ 7040, now numbered 2008 is out of service pending a 5 year flexi inspection.
The Boone & Scenic Valley JS 8419 is getting a 1472 service day inspection and other repairs.
NYS&W SY 1647M, now numbered 142, is getting a 1472 service day inspection.
Valley Railroad's SY 1658M, now numbered 3025 is in service, having received it's 1472 in 2011.
I would note that a 1472 service day inspection can be accomplished in a couple of months with a well equipped shop AND a full time crew. Doing this work with volunteers working weekends takes a bit longer. The NYS&W group is building a shop, which is taking precedence over the 142 at this time, but will expedite the work once it is complete.
Be well,
J.David
