If museum activities are being reduced or suspended, this may be a good time to consider developing some educational projects to share your knowledge with other members and the public through distance learning. The activity can be done remotely from home and in most organizations it only requires the assistance of the webmaster to get the developed content posted and shared. The railroad industry had a long history of leadership in distance learning developed through International Correspondence Schools and other organizations. There are many excellent examples from the past to study as a basis for developing new presentations.

It may also be an opportunity to make increased use of your scanner to make PDF copies of your accumulated technical library and your organization's past newsletters and event notices. Although the mission of museums is generally to preserve original printed materials rather than electronic copies, having PDF files of materials that are in your collections reduces the need to handle and wear out originals and often makes it easier to find information quickly when you need it.

Preston, our website (www.newenglandsteam.org) has a downloadable teacher's unit under the "Resources" heading. Members may wish to use it as a jumping off point or as it is presented, with our compliments.

Dick, thanks for posting that information. NESCO is doing a great job with their website and newsletters. Those interested in distance learning should take a look.

I see notices arriving from more organizations that they will shift their priorities to emphasize distance learning during the Coronavirus emergency. A new notice emphasizing educational mission and distance learning came in last night from the Steamship Historical Society of America.

I also noticed that Heritage Rail Alliance (HRA) hosted a webinar titled "Communicating with Your Visitors During Coronavirus" yesterday afternoon. Unfortunately my business activities prevented me from listening. Anyone who did participate might consider commenting.

There is a thirty-page list of the ICS railroad industry correspondence courses in the HRA library. It is down at the bottom of the page in the category "other" items. Original documents for many of these courses can often be found for sale on eBay.
