WD 2-8-0 3672 Oil Conversion

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway has recently announced that their War Department 2-8-0 will be undergoing a conversion from coal to oil burning in partnership with FMW Solutions

This has the usual British armchair reaction, but it is key to point out that locomotives in the UK have undergone oil conversions before and/or have burned oil

Congrats to FMW on landing another job. Like it or not oil is clearly the fuel of the future for steam and in no time it will be increasingly difficult to find coal fired steam in service.

A British WD 2-8-0. Not to be confused with the U.S. WD 2-8-0 which has also operated there.

Actually it is a 2-10-0 not 2-8-0. There is only 1 surviving WD 2-8-0 repatriated from Sweden to the Keighley & Worthy Valley Rly. where it starred in the film 'Yanks'.
WD 3672 at the North Yorks. Moors Railway was imported from Greece (as was another 2-10-0 and an S160) and is, indeed, currently being converted to burn oil. Whilst the cost and availability of coal is a contributory factor the main reason is to enable the NYMR to run steam during times of high fire risk. Currently diesels are substituted at these times.

There is a strong resemblance between the K&WVR 2-8-0 and the under-restoration Alaska Railroad 557.
