There is a diesel that appears to be long out of service located at an Arcosa Lightweight Aggregates facility south of Boulder Colorado on the east side of Highway 93.

I've only driven by this unit a couple times. I'm a steam fan, but I do take some interest in first generation diesels too, but even just driving by it quickly, I took note that it didn't appear to be a standard SD9 or something similar - it seems a little husky for that, and the cab looks unusual as well - it reminds me of some Baldwin and FM products of the era.

Can anyone identify what this unit is? I haven't been able to find it on any lists on the internet of preserved/existing diesels.

Link to a google maps street view.

It's a 4 axle EMD G8 export model.

She however was originally built with A-1-A trucks.

That locomotive is currently for sale if anyone is interested. It's probably going pretty cheap as I saw a ad on Craiglist last year listing it for free. Not sure if that was a joke or not. It is on a active rail line and not too far from the Union Pacific main line.

Thanks to you both for the identification and background. Nice to know I'm not seeing things and it really is an odd-duck (for the US anyway).

It appears to originally have been a 42" gauge locomotive so was it from the CN Newfoundland lines?

Yes and no...
It was built originally for export, but I believe it never went...it is standard gauge...
It's been for sale for some time now and hasn't run for around 10 years or so...
It's one of those pieces that has potential, but it may not be able to ship on its own wheels...

These locomotives were designed and built for use on lines requiring low axle weight loadings. The configuration would be A1A-AiA. Besides the export sales some were sold to Canadian roads.

When re-assigned to lines allowing greater axle loading the center axle was often removed.

There is a Wikipedia page for the EMD model G8.

Tom, do you have contact info for the owner?

Thanks

I'm curious. Is allowable axle loading the same regardless of axle spacing? As it applies here, if you have an A1A truck and remove the idler axle, are the remaining two axles, which are somewhat widely spaced, allowed to carry a greater load than a regular B truck whose axles are more closely spaced? (I'm guessing "no" as we don't see purpose-built long frame trucks.)

Chris it is located here right next to the highway. Locomotive is at the 7:00 mark. Locomotive was running when it was parked quite a few years ago. Active Union Pacific tracks to the site. There is a link to the company who owns it on the map. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Arcos ... 05.2396484
