I am sure many of you remember this print advertisement for the Southern Railway, from the 1970's. Does anyone know the persons in the photo? Are they actors, or actual train crew?

According to Ronald Norman, who was apart of the Southern Steam Program during that time, these were active Southern Railway employees at the time of the photo. The photo was taken at the station in Anniston, Alabama. The person to the far right is Mr. Bill Purdie.

I was going to guess the photo was taken at east Chattanooga station at the Tennessee Valley Railroad.

It’s a neat photo, I don’t think I’ve seen it before.

Trivia question:

What are those three hoses for,
and how many of them are still present 4501 today?

If I remember correctly...Graham Claytor Jr. is the man with the shovel and wasn't James Bistline one of them too?

SR still had steam heated excursion equipment back then, that's why the steam connection is still there.

Many years ago, I had a large print of this scene in my office.

I believe Jim Bistline was the Conductor.

4501 currently has two hose connections on the front. One is for the air, and the other, if I am correct, is for main reservoir, so if 4501 is double-heading, both locomotives can maintain train air.

When would a steam heat line on the front be used?

Some of the early 4501 trips, the locomotive ran around the train at the destination and operated tender first.

This is correct. There was also talk at one time of putting main reservoir through the entire train when we were running the 21st Century Steam program to have the ability to maintain air so we could with graduated release settings.

Info from Bill Schafer of the Southern Railway Historical Association and Donald Purdie confirmed that Bill Purdie is on the right holding the oil can. The gentleman behind him is remembered as part of the steam crew; the other three were regular crewmen from the Alabama Division East End. Donald no longer recalls their names. As noted above, the location is Anniston, Alabama.
