To close out its first-ever online conference, on March 25 HeritageRail Alliance presented its annual awards. Normally that happens in the Fall, so blame Covid for the delay.

Note: We only awarded projects completed in 2020. Any completed later will be candidates at the Fall HRA Conference in November.

First come awards for significant achievements in specific types of projects.

Steam
We recognized three completed steam locomotive restorations.
To the Strasburg Rail Road and Colorado Railroad Museum for their joint restoration of Rio Grande Southern 4-6-0 #20 (Schenectady 1899). This brings a very tired engine back to a better condition than when it was still in service.

To the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad for restoring Denver & Rio Grande 4-6-0 #168 (Baldwin 1883). It’s part of a larger project to restore an authentic 19th century Rio Grande passenger train to run on home rails.

To the Black Hills Central for restoring Weyerhauser 2-6-6-2T #108 (Baldwin 1926). The railroad can now field double-headed 2-6-6-2Ts.

Diesel
To Southern California Railway Museum for Southern Pacific SW1 #1006 (EMC 1939). Although not a large locomotive, this was a total rebuild.

Electric Car
Fort Collins Municipal Railway returned Fort Collins Birney #25 (American 1919) to service, running on one of its original routes.

Passenger Cars
As mentioned above, the Cumbres & Toltec has completed three of the four cars in its reborn Denver & Rio Grande 19th century passenger train. The cars are:
RPO/baggage #65 (home built 1887)
Coach #256 (Billmeyer & Small 1876)
Coach #292 (Jackson & Sharp 1878)
Still under restoration is Pay Car F (Billmeyer & Small 1878)
New replica passenger trucks were built for all the cars.

Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum restored Central of Georgia lightweight combine #690 (ACF 1947), part of the original Nancy Hanks II streamliner.

Freight Cars
The Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum and the Age of Steam Roundhouse were recognized for completing multiple freight car restorations over the last few years.

Infrastructure
Besides rolling stock restorations, HRA encourages museums to invest in infrastructure. The Cranbrook History Centre was recognized for completing Phase 1 of a large timber display shed to cover its collection of Canadian passenger train consists.

The Mad River & NKP Railroad Museum built its first shop building.

Archives
Over the last year HeritageRail Alliance has built an online library of technical reference materials for preservationists. We gave awards to two of the major contributors to that effort. Both are well known to RyPN readers.

Preston Cook has championed the preservation of vintage diesel locomotives and has shared a wealth of technical manuals and other materials, with more to come.

Rich Ashton has shared catalogs and other materials from Ashton Valve Company, a major supplier of steam hardware.

Friend of Railway Preservation Award
The Friend of Railway Preservation Award goes to those who provide valuable assistance. This year we recognize Richard & Carolyn Tower, whose Candelaria Fund has given over $3 million to preservation projects.

Lifetime Achievement Award
Until we run out of viable candidates, HRA’s Lifetime Achievement Awards will go to individuals who have had an impact beyond a single museum or railroad.

Ted Kornweibel is the foremost authority on the relationship between African-Americans and railroads. His book “Railroads in the African-American Experience” is the definitive work on the subject. As a volunteer with the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum he oversaw the acquisition and restoration of Rockdale Sandow & Southern Jim Crow combine #3. He also inventoried all the surviving Jim Crow passenger cars.

John Bush recently retired from his second stint at the Cumbres & Toltec, this time as President. He previously worked at Roaring Camp Railroads, the Georgetown Loop and the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. He is a past president of the Tourist Railway Association, and a board member at both TRAIN and HRA.
