That looks like a thoroughly worthwhile project, Les. Congratulations for the third time in the last month, and best of luck to all the HVRM crew with your latest mission.

Take Care & WORK SAFE,
Sammy & Audrey

I got to operate that engine just before it was moved off property. I was up helping the Kentucky steam heritage group move equipment around the grounds. That engine was in incredible shape. I had never ran an sw1 and was impressed with how well she loaded and ran. To say I was sad when it got damaged is an understatement. I’m glad to see someone working to bring her back to where she deserves to be.

Here are a couple of shots of the SW1 arriving at Hoosier Valley yesterday. When the unit arrived at the museum and tried to make the sharp turn in to the Shop area, the truck got stuck. The first photo shows museum President Todd Flanigan in the museums payloader, giving an assist in pulling the truck onto the property. During the work to get the unit unloaded and onto shop rails, the second photo shows the moving crews Joey Schlatter directing as the back road trailer set is being pulled out from under the DS-50. The final photo shows the 1942-built EMD sitting on its own trucks prior to being shoved back into the West Annex of HVRM's Shop.

This is so cool that your museum is going to restore this locomotive. It was such a tragic and preventable accident and to see someone getting ready to put her back together and put her back to use is great. Make sure to post updates/pics on the restoration. I will enjoy seeing them.

A couple of quick updates on Monon DS-50. The first photo below, shows the SW1 as it now sits in the West Annex of the museums Shop building as of this past Saturday, 4/24/21. The second photo was taken the previous Saturday and shows the interior of the cab with the results of the cab hitting the overpass still very much in evidence. Those residual results were quickly addressed last week and the third photo shows the way the cab appeared this past Saturday after the clean up.

Also arriving at the musem this past week, was the replacement cab for DS-50. Using the museums Purdue University ORTON crane, Mark Knebel unloaded the cab from the semi that arrived safely at North Judson. The first photo shows the left side and rear end of the cab. The second shot shows the hood end and right side and in the final photo, a close up of the hood connections.

For this that might be interested, the cab is off of Chicago and North Western #1215, an SW1 built by EMD 12/42 (s/n 1745). The unit was later renumbered by the C&NW as number 618 before being sold.

Walter - I can tell you that much work has been done on the replacement cab preparatory to its being installed on Monon DS-50, including the removal of many parts. Here are 3 shots showing that the the EMD was then moved out of its spot in Hoosier Valley's shop building back in May and that the replacement cab was moved to a point behind the DS-50. The first shot shows the cab back at the end of the shop track, the 2nd photo shows the SW-1 put back onto the shop track with the replacement cab behind it and the final shot shows a close up of the cab area of the DS-50 and the replacement cab. I have not been at the museum for over a month due to a minor physical problem, so not sure what, if anything, has been done since these photos.
