I give them an own topic.

Jeff,
yes you absolutely right Saginaw #2 and Polson #70 were always saturated slide valve
nowadays called 70ton (Baldwin never used this description) 12-30-1/4-E logging mikados.
Man what I would like to see them doublehead a string of 30+ period (1920s) original Boxcars...
Dreaming....

But I wondering that you spread the rumor about that #70 is a copy of #2.
I hear this year after year even before #2 get back west.
Even told by some very influencing people around the community it make it not more true.

Polson copied their OWN Mikado #101 build in 1912!
Both were influenced by the Peninsular #9 from 1910 and almost identical copies to
Twin Falls Logging #102/103 from Jan 1912.

What made the #70 scientific in Baldwin history more interesting is the numbering fact.
Line Number 39 put it in 1915/16. Construction number is the actually date made in 1922.
My guess is that Polson contracted that engine in 1915 so far that Baldwin spent a line number,
then even the War or Polson economics delayed the actual manufacturing until 1922.
Just a guess.

Interesting. Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad before its sale to Heritage Railways published small informational booklets about their railroad and equipment, they report the connection between the 70 and 2 and the Polson master mechanic in the various versions of that booklet I have. Clearly something that requires further research.

Thanks for the additions to this subject.

My apologies for stating the #70 was superheated. When we were working on the #2 this came up in conversation and I remembered it as the #70 had been either built or converted to super heated. Guess I remembered wrong eh? We talked about the cost savings for the #2 not having to add the super heat to the cost of boiler work. Sorry for the misinformation on my part. I have never seen the #70 up close and personal but have a thing for it after working on the #2. Regards, John.
