Stephen F. Austin State University sold this Shay to Michigan. https://www.trains.com/trn/news-reviews ... -hometown/ https://www.dailysentinel.com/social_me ... ae293.html The locomotive has 10x12 cylinders and is a class 37-2 or 42-2 not 36ton as in the news. Lima changed the designation for 10x12 around 1907 from 37-2 to 42-2 so I am not sure what 100% correct.

Thats awesome!!! I always pass Harbor Springs on my way to northern Michigan it'll be nice to have another locomotive on display up here then just EJ&E 6 in East Jordan. |

Lima classified the locomotive as a 42-2. The empty weight listed by Lima is 68,900# or just short of 35 tons. Thus the description of the locomotive as weighing 36 tons is close. It is good to see it going to a new home and a cosmetic restoration. |

For the record, the Angelina County Lumber Co. steel log car that has been behind the locomotive for many years has also been saved. It has been donated by the university to the Southern Forest Heritage Museum in Long Leaf, LA where it will go on display with the museum's almost completed cosmetically restored (and perhaps operable on compressed air) McGiffert Log loader. |

It was about 1966 when I photographed this engine in the WT Carter deadline. Peeling lead based paint was actually in better condition than the metal parts, and everything was completely submerged in vines, weeds, mud dauber nests, wasp nests, and animal waste. She didn't even look to be worth scrapping. In the photo starting this thread, she looks fantastic by comparison. I tip my company issued, safety recognition, employee hat to everybody who must have done an enormous amount of work over the years to achieve this bona-fide miracle !!! |

Harbor Springs should be a good home for this engine. Another Shay is on display under a roof in Cadillac, a couple miles south of the site where Shay's first engines worked. This park is the terminus of occasional trips by PM 1225, a later and larger Lima product. Ephraim Shay's house made of octagonal steel cells is now a dress shop. His brick hobby machine shop was flattened about 30 years ago to make room for more condos in this rich lakefront town. I had wondered what had become of the hulk of the steel yacht AHA, which was salvaged and on display in a now-vanished collection of boats at Mackinac City.
